Littleton, Winchester.

Littleton is about three miles north-west of Winchester. It sits between the Roman road to Cirencester and Stockbridge road. There are approximately 450 homes in Littleton. In the 1870’s it is recorded that Littleton had a population of just 109 people and 25 houses.

The Flowerdown Barrows

The Flowerdown Barrows are well-preserved Bronze Age burial mounds on the edge of the village of Littleton. Constructed 4,000 years ago, they were once part of a much larger 'barrow cemetery'.

The location is listed on the English Heritage website and is free to visit if you are interested in viewing some Bronze age history.

 

The Running Horse

The local pub serves up excellent food and has a great garden - the perfect place for a cold beer in the sunshine.

 

A bit of history

Littleton was originally a small hamlet outside Winchester and still retains half a dozen houses dating back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. They are clustered around St Catherine's church - including the old parsonage beside the church itself.

 

Village Hall

The refurbished Littleton village hall is made up of a main hall, meeting room and fully equipped kitchen - perfect for birthday parties and other large events.

Littleton Stud

The village has a history with horses dating back to the 1800’s. Nowadays, Littleton Stud (an internationally-renowned stud farm) produces horses that compete at the highest level - including 'wonder horse' Frankel.

St Catherine’s Church

An entry in the Domesday Book implies that there was a church on this site in Littleton during Saxon times - over a thousand years ago.
